According to theOAIC biannual report,malicious or criminal attacks caused 48 breacheswithin healthcare, making them the leading threat. Compared to previous reports, this marks a significant shift, ashuman error was once the main cause.
Cyber incidents such asphishing attacks and ransomwarewere responsible for31 breaches. Across all industries,446 data breacheswere recorded in the first six months of 2021. These affected sectors includingfinance, legal, accounting, insurance, government, andhealthcare. Despite this large number, there was a16% decreasecompared to July-December 2020, withMarch recording the most notifications.
Overall,malicious or criminal attacks accounted for 289 cases-65% of all breaches. The most commonly compromised information includedcontact details. Around93% of breaches impacted 5,000 individuals or fewer, and65% affected 100 people or fewer.
